My goodness, these are trying times.  I'm the first to admit that life gets me down sometimes.  There are time when I don't want to get out of bed, let alone face the day.  But I do.

My community has been devastated by horrific events these past few weeks.  We've had four murders.  Two were children.  There has also been a non-fatal stabbing and a series of break-ins.  For a small town like mine, these things just don't happen.  I know I sound naive here, but I'm serious.  Our town is literally in shock over these events.  You take that and add the hideous events of Sandy Hook....and that will make anyone doubt goodness in the world.

In times like these, I try to be thankful.

I am thankful that I am healthy, have a job, & have friends, family and pets that love me unconditionally.  I try to remember that, no matter what my problems are, I am a fortunate person.  I may rant from time to time but all in all, I do not have a bad life.  I need to remember not to take that for granted.

Life is precious and fleeting.  It's gone in the blink of an eye.  As I sit here this morning, I realize that I didn't mean to sit down and write this --- it just sort of, well, happened.  I just started typing.

Resolutions.  Most of us make them, most of us break them.  Well, my number one this year is to BE THANKFUL.  I will honestly try my hardest not to break this one, even if I slip up on whatever others I make.  Because, no matter what is going on in the world, we all have something to be thankful for.

First Thing

I'm stealing this idea from Blonde Undercover Blonde!

First thing you do when you wake up in the morning:
Grumble that I have to get up.

First thing you reach for when you open the fridge:
Lemon-Lime Gatorade.

First things you do when you get to the gym:
Wait....I'm at the gym?

First thing you do when you get home from work:
Put my purse down and say hi to the kitties, dog & boyfriend.

First car:
A ghetto Grand-Am.

First accident/traffic violation:
I hit a car trying to make a left hand turn....did I mention that this happened RIGHT AFTER I'd gotten my license.  Oh sucked big time.

First thing you wanted to be when you grew up:
Architect/Interior Designer

First choice beverage:

First choice breakfast:
Best breakfast ever with the worst name - the Rooty Tooty Fresh N' Fruity from iHop.
(chocolate chip pancakes with strawberries on top, scrambled eggs, ham & bacon for the win.)

First choice dessert:
Creme Brulee.

First song that comes to mind:
"Changes" by David Bowie

First major purchase:
Um...I don't know that I've made a 'major' purchase.  Major for me is like $300 or a TV, I guess?

First job: [aside from babysitting]
Oh gosh, that was like forever ago.  I worked at Subway when I was like 14 (for like 2 weeks.)  I also worked at Domino's, a shoe store, and Stage...although I can't remember which one of those I did first.
First time you flew on a plane:
The ONLY time I've ever been on a plane was in 2nd grade at the town festival.  There was this guy giving plane rides to kids in this little 3 seater plane.  We get in the air and he pretends to fall asleep.  Needless to say, that jerk scarred me for life.

What are your firsts?

Mani Monday!

Tonight I get to make some Christmas wishes come true.  I'm in Junior Auxiliary and tonight is our annual Christmas shopping outing for the Angel Tree.  Every single child on our Christmas this year will get some fabulous presents straight from their Dear Santa wishlist.

I wanted to do my nails in something cute to match our Christmas shirts, but then I thought...well, we'll be grabbing and buying and bagging and wrapping -- this mani is going to get tore up.  So I went with a simpler alternative.  I just did a few coats of "Vivien" from Julep's American Beauty collection.  It's a gorgeous clear coat polish that features gold micro glitter as well as huge gold glitter flakes.  I feel like my nails are very 'Kate Spade' right now!

Do you like?  I know it's super simple, but at the same time I'm feeling pretty festive!

Pick Me Up, Love...

As you've probably noticed, I've been feeling pretty low lately.  I was trolling through Etsy this morning and found a lovely shop called KensieKate.  Her designs inspired me to pick myself up off the ground.  I wanted to share a few with you, in case some of you were feeling a little junky too.

Advice To My Younger Self

It seems like I am always thinking back to some stupid thing I did or some thing I wish I could change.  It eats me up inside and makes me have a panic attack.  There are so many things I wish I could tell my younger self (provided that younger-me would listen, that is!) so that I wouldn't end up making the mistakes I have and harboring the regrets that I do.

Dear Younger Self,
  • Don’t let other people decide your self-worth. I spent so much time being so shy because I didn't feel confident in myself that I missed out on a lot of fun opportunities.  I was scared of people because I didn't want to get hurt.  But, you know what --- you're going to get hurt anyway.  That's life and hurt/pain happens to everyone.  Also, you need to work on handling that hurt/pain better, as you are pretty much a hot mess mix of panic attack + freak out when faced with it.
  • Invest in yourself. I should have found something I was passionate about and cultivated it.  That could have been your career, your life's passion.
  • Take care of yourself. Exercise, eat right, don’t smoke; wear make-up if it makes you feel good. Style your hair. Maintain a good skincare regime. All these things become exponentially harder as you get older.  Take better care of yourself now so you won't have health problems later.
  • Play the field. Not that there’s anything wrong with settling down at a younger age or with a high school sweetheart at all.  But believe me, in your case, the one that you think is 'the one' is just going to leave you and when he does, it's going to jack you up for years.  It's going to take a LONG time for you to be okay with it and it will impact your future relationships in a bad way.  There were a few good guys you dated that didn't deserve to be treated the way they were just because you were still hung up on 'him'.  Learn that it’s okay to date for the sake of dating. It gives you an idea of what you want in a long-term partner – and what you don’t. And besides, you’ll get some great stories out of it.
  • Realize that you came from a messed up family.  Start therapy.  Start it early.  Understand that your situation is not normal and don't fool yourself into thinking it is.  Learn values and get advice from your friends' parents on how to grow up successfully.  The issues you have that come from your family situation growing up will haunt you for years and years.  It will impact the decisions you make on getting married and having children of your own.
  • Choose a career that lights your soul on fire. Passion lends itself to success, so no matter what field you choose, if you love it, you’ll do well.
  • Hang on to the friends that are worth it.  I know that in life, friends come and go.  Get it through your head that the friends you have in High School are worth it.  You will lose them later on if you keep up your path of self destruction.  It will make you very sad when you think about it.
  • Be responsible with money.  My god, this is a lesson that is so hard to learn for you.  Start a savings account.  Use this savings account to actually SAVE money.  Don't buy things you can't afford and for the love of god, stay away from credit cards.
  • Stop trying to impress people.  Yeah, it's High School and 'image is everything'.  But it's important to remember that those people who were shitty to you in High School have issues of their own and you don't know what makes them the way they are.  Do your best to be YOU.  Be kind, smile, laugh, be silly -- because that's who you are.  Confidence is sexy.  People will either like you or they won't, and you can't please everyone.
  • Live alone for a while. I know you won't admit it, but you hate being alone.  The thought scares the hell out of you.  It will be tough and you will have hard times but with responsible money management (learn it!), you can pay your bills and have food to eat.  If you're bored, go hang out with a friend.
  • Learn that it’s okay to like yourself. When is the last time someone paid you a compliment and you believed them? Brighten up.  Stand up straight and project how awesome you can be.  Boys will flirt with you.  I know it's scary and I know I thought they were making fun of me.  Wipe that out of your head and grow a (metaphorical) pair.  Flirt back.  Be confident.  Don't automatically assume everyone is an ass.  Give people a chance.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
