Vocabulary Lessons w/ Gwyneth Paltrow

Let's have a collective eye-roll for the term "conscious uncoupling", shall we?

Help me out here, Dawson...

There, now, do you feel better?  A good eye-roll always relieves some stress.  In Gwynethese the term "conscious uncoupling" means "divorce".  Being the deep, meaningful soul that she is, the soon-to-be former Mrs. Martin has so come up with some ludicrous phrase to make herself seem all, I don't know, profound & whatnot?

I'm sorry, but I can't stand Gwyneth Paltrow.  Everything she does reminds me once again of how pretentious she is.  Her absurdly titled separation announcement is nothing more than a carefully orchestrated p.r. move.  Vanity Fair apparently got wind of the news months & months ago but declined to run an article because Gwyneth wasn't properly ready for the news to go public (read: she didn't have a spin for the story yet).

It's honestly not shocking that yet another celebrity couple splits up.  Us average people are captivated by the lives of the rich and famous.  I mean, really...I'm talking about the lady and I don't even like her!

“We’re human beings and the sun is the sun—how can it be bad for you? I don’t think anything that’s natural can be bad for you.” - Gwyneth Paltrow

You've got to give her credit, though.  People came in droves to see the GOOP-y announcement; in fact, the site crashed within hours of the announcement due to the heavy traffic.  She's not like us, you guys.  She recommends things like a $425 cleanse, a $1,300 pinkie ring & oh, I don't know, a $315 throw pillow?  Wow, she really meant it when she said,  "I can’t pretend to be somebody who makes $25,000 a year."

I feel like Chris Martin is probably somewhere having a toast to his new found freedom.  Years of cleanses, organic food & no sugary sweets have probably made him slightly mad.  I mean, who doesn't love a cupcake every once in a while?  I imagine he's in a pub somewhere, eating a whole pizza and drinking as much beer as humanly possible...but that's just me.

I tend to be slightly confused about celebrity breakup announcements.  They always have the obligatory "we'll always love each other", "we will remain friends".... blah, blah, blah.  As someone who has watched my parents as well as friends go through divorces (or even breakups, for that matter), I know full well that when people have an "uncoupling", it's rarely a civilized, friendly matter.

“Beauty fades! I just turned 29, so I probably don’t have that many good years left in me.” - Gwyneth Paltrow

The Ice Queen then asks for privacy while they sort things out.  If you wanted privacy, you could have, I don't know, NOT put a statement on the GOOP?  Mentioned it in the newsletter?  You could have just let it be between you and Chris instead of you + Chris + the entire world.  Some couples break up without a press release.  It happens.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'd like celebrities to be human every once in a while.  The fa├žade you feel you have to present to the world - doesn't that ever get old?  It's okay to be angry, to be hurt.  Instead you invite a couple doctors to your site so they can explain to the average people what consciously uncoupling actually is.  When Gwyneth is snobby, she's hardcore snobby.  Feel free to read the article here.  Friendly warning, though.  It is highly ridiculous.  Something about how divorce (or uncoupling) is due to our life expectancy and how we get tired of the same person so we go find another person who we will eventually get tired of...So it's kind of like trading in a car?  The doctors then supplied us with this little nugget:

"By choosing to handle your uncoupling in a conscious way, regardless of what's happening with your spouse, you'll see that although it looks like everything is coming apart; it's actually all coming back together again." - Dr. Habib Sadeghi & Dr. Sherry Sami

That sounds like a long winded version of something you'd read in a self help book.  "Even though your life is imploding, it's actually not.".  In all seriousness, the only thing I honestly care about is their kiddos.  As a child of (many) divorce(s), I can tell you that it is really hard on the kids.  Kids don't fully grasp why someone is there one minute and not the next.  I hope for the sake of Apple & Moses that their parents let them know that they are loved and both spend as much time with them as possible.

“I’d rather smoke crack than eat cheese from a tin.” - Gwyneth Paltrow

Roosevelt is right.

We're all guilty of it.  Comparing our lives with the lives of others.  Things like clothes, vehicles, homes, friends --- thoughts of inadequacy have gone though my head.  Comparing what you don't have to what someone else does can be quite debilitating.  Self doubt sets in, anxiety takes root and before you know it, you're very unhappy and nothing seems good enough.

I even find myself sometimes having blog envy.  Bloggers, I know you feel me on this.  You see a blog that you feel is similar in style or tone but is vastly more popular and you wonder to yourself why you don't have a similar success.  I don't pretend to know what I'm doing all of the time and lord knows I don't consider myself a blogging expert.  I guess my point is this --- I've decided to liberate myself of my self doubt.  My clothes, body, vehicle, home, friends & blog (plus whatever else I've missed) is good enough.  It's more than good enough.  It's awesome.

I'm fortunate in a lot of ways.  Just because I don't have the newest, hottest, blah blah blah...doesn't mean what I do have isn't great in it's own way.  Suck it, doubt!  It doesn't bother me if so-and-so got engaged; I just celebrated my 9-year anniversary with my boyfriend and I am perfectly content with that.  Who cares if my house is older and my car isn't brand new?  I've got the sun on my face and it feels good.  Warm and bright and happy.

I will not obsess over what I'm "doing wrong" as far as blog popularity goes.  I will be delighted in the fact that someone actually wants to read what I write!  If I get popular, then that's fantastic.  If I stay small, that's just fine too.  I will be happy with what I have.

I am enough.  I need to learn to take pride in the fact that I am a good friend.  I am a good sister.  I am a good girlfriend.  I do try to be a good person.  No, I'm not Mother Teresa.  I have many flaws but I try to make the best of them.  I am the girl who spends hours trying to find the perfect gift or plan the best birthday party.  I'm the friend who helps you move or babysits your kids even though I am dog tired and my house is a hot mess.  I am that shoulder to cry on, that ear that listens, the baker who makes you cupcakes when you're having a bad day.

I am guilty of feeling less than.  I am guilty of being unfair in reactionary events.  I sometimes wonder if they're as happy for me as I was for them.  If I need help but no one comes to my aid like I do for theirs.  These reactionary events steal my happiness.  They steal my joy, dammit!  Mr. Theodore Roosevelt is right.  Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy.  A banishment of comparison-thinking is way past due.  I need to realize and remember that we all handle life in a unique way.  We react differently.  We live differently.  I want to be happy.  I need it.  I think I deserve it.  I think we all do.

{RECIPE} Pear Cranberry Clementine Water

I love Spring.  I mean, what's not to love!?  I like to go walking with my little Jack Russell and it's finally warm enough to start again!  I've never been a big fan of water (as you all know) but I realize how important it is to hydrate.  I like to mix it up and add some natural flavor to make it actually appealing and this is one of my favorites so far.

One of the great things about fruit water is that you can refill the pitcher roughly 3 to 5 times, depending on how fast you drink it and how quickly the flavor dissipates.

Cranky + Inspiration

dat moose.  the weird things I do to amuse myself...

I'm not entirely sure who told migraines that it was A-okay to move in and make a permanent residence in my head but yeah, I'm not okay with that decision.  In fact, I'm pretty massively tired of having a migraine (or even a headache for that matter) almost every day.  I'm bound and determined (where did that phrase come from??) to not let it ruin my day today.  I'm actually trying very hard not to be miserable right now.  I've been checking up on some of my favorite blogs today and man, I am overwhelmed with inspiration!  There are a couple posts that I feel the need to highlight, if for nothing more than having a bookmark so I can go back to OOH & AHH over later (plus that whole, you know, sharing awesome stuff with you guys thing!)....

I'm mad obsessed with Leslyn's house.  The chairs in the kitchen, the headboard in her baby's room, the hydrangeas...  Basically I'd be here all day if I kept listing everything I totally l-o-v-e about her design style.  I really do adore the abundant use of white with gorgeous accent colors, though.  My boyfriend is a "bull in a china shop" kind of guy so the whiteness would not last very long in my house so I'll just have to adore from afar, I guess.

I'm also quite curious about maca root.  I'd honestly never heard about it until today but then I read this post on Kate's blog about it and now my interest is piqued.  Kate puts it in her green smoothies.  That's another thing I'm curious about.  Dem smoothies.  I tried making a smoothie ONCE.  I say only once because I'm a dumbass and tried to make one using apples.  Let me count the ways that that did not work out.  Pulpy.  Chunky.  Skin-ny?  Yeah, I kept the apple skin on.  Yeah, I tried mixing it with juice, with strawberries...but it was a big ol' mess and kind of ruined my smoothie-making before it even began.  I might, maybe, may try to make a green smoothie at some point in the future due to this post.  Hopefully it will turn out better than the last attempt.

It's time for #BackThatAzzUp Friday!  I know Fiona Apple doesn't really make you want to back it up, but I really do love this song.  It's so beautiful.  I love the video as well....the striking black and white...so lovely.

It's time for Back That Azz Up Friday!  Join me & link up your jam at I Wore Yoga Pants!  Oh my gosh, you guys, I hadn't heard this song since I was a teenager!  It was on the radio when I was leaving work yesterday and I'm like "Holy crap, that's my jam!"  Yeah, I just totally dated myself right there.... Sad face.  I remember jumping on my trampoline, listening to this song on repeat, trying to remember the words.  Memories....
