On The Bookshelf

As a voracious reader, I tend to go through a lot of books.  Some memorable, some not.  I stumbled upon a worn copy of Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen while browsing though our local thrift store a few years ago.  Having never heard of the author, but enchanted by the description on the back cover, I had to get it.

Fast forward a few years later & I own every single one of her books, each one as captivating as the next.  So jam packed with whimsy, wonder & a little bit of magic (not the Harry Potter kind), they read in a way that you can see it all unfolding in your head - that you feel like you're there with the characters.  I don't know about you, but if I can't magically live in Stars Hollow from The Gilmore Girls, I want to live in one of Sarah Addison Allen's fictional towns.  Picking which one, however, would be a challenge.

First Frost is the author's latest novel and is a sequel of sorts to the book that got me hooked, Garden Spells.  Two of the main characters from Garden Spells, Clare & Bay, pop up for a minute in Sarah's novel The Peach Keeper, but this is the first time she's ever written an actual sequel to one of her books before and I'm so excited to read it.  Find me on Goodreads, where I share my favorite books.

Geeking Out: Play Oregon Trail, Wolfenstein, SimCity, Carmen Sandiego and other classic MS-DOS games free online!

My inner child is having a field day.

The Internet has delivered us yet another fantastic distraction from actually getting things done; this time in the form of The Internet Archive.  The IA geniuses have presented us with thousands of our favorite childhood MS-DOS games to play for FREE.  Did I mention that I love you, Internet Archive?

 Poor Nicole...

While The Oregon Trail is obviously a huge draw (I mean, who doesn't want to die of dysentery?  Figuratively, of course.), I found myself geeking out over games like Zelda, Wolfenstein, Donkey Kong, SimCity, Pac-Man, Doom, Street Fighter, Indiana Jones, Pole Position, Gremlins, Psycho, Carmen Sandiego, Wayne's World & Beetlejuice, amongst many others.  These were the games of my childhood!

 Party Time!  Excellent!

I'm also a big fan of Game-Tek's Double Dare (I loved the show) and Lemmings 3D by Clockwork Games. And who can forget all the incredible Disney games based off of their movies & tv shows from back in the day?  I played so many of them!

If you want to escape from the everyday or just feel a little bit of childhood nostalgia, this is definitely the place to go.
