This Article Will Make You Want To Travel The World

There are few experiences that can change your life and open your mind as much as overseas travel, especially if you take the opportunity to live and work in your host country rather than just passing through. The different perspectives that it gives you are absolutely unrivaled and may help you in later you are making memories that will literally last a lifetime. Leaving the comfort of your home environment can be quite a big step, and many people dream of the day they will find the courage to see the world. But perhaps it’s time to stop dreaming and start doing. The first step is the hardest, but once you’ve taken it, you’ll never look back. Stepping onto that plane may be extraordinarily nerve-wracking, but there are ways to lessen the jolt with a few little luxuries. Still need convincing? Take a look at all the ways traveling can enrich your life and the skills it can give you:

Collect Memories, Not Souvenirs

From bustling European metropolises to the brave new cities of China to America’s hidden gems and beyond, collecting experiences is something that behavioral scientists agree will make you quantifiably happier than receiving lots of material possessions. Taking time to explore and wander the streets somewhere new or the moment of joy when you finally figure out a foreign public transport system gives you a feeling of freedom like nothing else. You won’t only discover things about the places you visit; you’ll discover things about yourself as well. Being in new situations & interacting with new people will bring out qualities you may not be aware you had. It forces you to be adaptable and open-minded and to learn how to think on your feet, all of which are valuable workplace skills. And it’s a funny thing, but the more you travel, the less critical material things seem. Having to fit everything you own into a rucksack teaches you an awful lot about what you can live without, as well as how to get creative with styling the same shirt many different ways! If you travel with others, you’ll forge a unique bond from experiencing new scenarios together that can’t be made any other way, and if there are people left behind at home, you may well find that absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder.

See A Different Point Of View

We are all inescapably a product of our upbringing and the environment we are raised in, but sometimes it takes time away from your own culture to realize how deeply embedded that is. Each country you visit is packed full of culture, social norms, customs and traditions that will feel utterly alien at first – but you may well find you grow to love them. It’s always best to brush up on some visitor’s etiquette before you land – although people tend to be reasonably forgiving towards foreigners. There are moments in every traveling experience where you may find yourself relying on the kindness of strangers. A little bit of effort goes a long way though, and you could find that making an effort to learn a few key phrases, taking a few small gifts, or even just showing a genuine desire to learn about your destination buy you a lot of goodwill. Finding out why people hold the beliefs they have and live the way they do can make you see your own in another light. Good or bad – either way it’s nice to realize the extent of your own culture.

Makes You More Outgoing

There’s nothing like going overseas to give you a new lease of confidence – having to deal with unfamiliar situations takes you right outside of your comfort zone. What lies beyond there? Well, you’ll find that's where you can really grow as a person and develop your skills. Everything is a victory, from the first time you manage to order food successfully to making a new friend – and each step will give you a whole heap of self-belief too. Learning different ways of doing things, often in the company of strangers, makes you step outside of yourself, and outside of old beliefs about what you ‘can’ do. Something about being away from people who know you gives you a chance to reinvent yourself and become whatever you want to be. You may find that you’ll meet a few others who are also traveling and those people could become friends for life. Making firm friends in your destination country means you’ll always be sure of a warm welcome if you travel there in the future. You could even meet the love of your life? You just never know, and that’s the ultimate thrill of opening up your life.

Find Out What Makes You Happy

Have you ever stopped to question what makes you happy? Are you doing the same old things and feeling unfulfilled? Leaving behind all the expectations and allowing yourself to try new things is a surefire route to discovering what it is out there that makes your heart sing. Whether it’s a volunteering opportunity that gives you a new cause to feel passionate about to just dancing barefoot on a beach under the stars, stepping out of our everyday routine allows us to concentrate on how we are feeling much more, and what values we have underneath the surface. Perhaps you’ll find somewhere you want to stay for a while or a new career you’d never thought of.

Makes You A Pro At Problem Solving

From the moment you land, you’ll have to think on your feet to solve the hundreds of little daily challenges that come with navigating your way through foreign lands. From negotiating a taxi ride from the airport to finding people to connect with, there’s a lot to think about. Concentrating on sorting the basics first – and here’s where a little local insight can pay dividends. Connect with a local property expert to find the lowdown on rentals without being caught by ‘tourist tax’. Find local sites like that will give you access to a range of properties. Next, work out how the local transport system works, and where the best local places to go for food are - here is a great place to start: Once those basics are sorted, you can concentrate on planning the rest of your adventure. But trying to get an internet connection in Brazil at short notice? That really will make you an expert problem-solver!

Live With No Regrets

Not having seen enough of the world is frequently featured on lists of things people regret not doing. If those people only knew the sense of accomplishment & appreciation of other cultures and the joy of coming home after being away, they’d probably regret it even more. You should only regret things you do in life, not things you never did. So consider how you can make it happen. Whether it's creating a savings plan or looking into work placements abroad, what do you need to do to make it happen? Sometimes finding out what’s stopping you can seem complex but actually, you can make it simple. Break that barrier down into achievable steps and commit to making it happen.

There are so many extraordinary benefits to embracing a life abroad -  and the above is only just the beginning. Think of the people, experiences and memories awaiting you on the other side of the world and take the leap – it’s something you’ll never regret.
